The famed Corsair made its long-awaited arrival into War At Sea in set four. Just by the raw numbers on the card, this is the most powerful fighter in the game. 9 AA against bombers, a ludicrous 11 AA against enemy fighters, Escort, and the one-use Rocket Attack make the Corsair appear to be a killing machine. But there are two things that hold the Corsair back: Land Fighter and the Hellcat. All of a sudden, this plane doesn't seem as good when a Hellcat can deploy every round as well as equal the Corsair's AA (given the use of a carrier's Expert Dogfighter) for the same cost. However, that doesn't render this useless. Carriers do have limited basing capacity, and Expert Dogfighter can only be used on one fighter. For example if your carrier is already loaded out with a Wildcat escort and some USN bombers, why not add a fighter-hunter to cut down some Zero's while your strike planes are at work? Most of the time, you are better off with a Hellcat, but don't count the Corsair out of your fleet builds.

I would also like to put in a word for the IJN's controversial brother of the Corsair, the George. Take a look at it and decide for yourself.

EDIT: After Set V and Surface Action, and the introduction of the amazing P-40, this fighter isn't looking too good at all. One Corsair is a tough sell over two Warhawks if you're looking for cheap land-based air defense, and if you want a fighter killer, then go for a Carrier Corsair or Hellcat. There are just not many reasons to take this one anymore.

Another US super fighter yeeeeaaaaaazzzzzzzZZZZ , I'm not even going to get into the cost comparison. You know the one. 6/10

The gold standard for a fighter option. In larger fleet builds, it will make an appearance to target that #1 bomber you most want to shoot down. Or roll 11 dice to try to destroy a fighter.

The Hellcat and Warhawk, together, made this unit completely obsolete… Hellcat is the same price with one less AA and no Rocket Attack SA, but can land on carriers and therefore fly every turn and benefit from Expert SAs, and the Warhawk is half the cost with Escort… Then, you also have the new Corsair, which bests every other fighter in the game when it comes to AA and anti ship capabilities…

It, quite simply, has no place in any USN builds. There are many planes available to the U.S. which are better than this.

Plastic Figure Notes:

A carrier capable reprint, the F4U 1D Corsair was issued in set VI Surface Action, so the sculpt is relatively cheap on the singles market.
