This ship is not a good AA escort alone. However, in large games pair it with an Atlanta and a carrier, with the same one sector away. In my experience it is impenetrable. San Diego has a better chance to survive in a shootout because of Near Miss. If no longer needed as an AA escort, she is best used as a destroyer killer.
